Construction Chronicles - Close to the Finish Line

We are in the final stages of the house and it's unbelievable to see it at this stage.  Our items from storage are coming on Monday and we're beginning to move into our new home!  It's hard to believe that it was just this time last year when we seriously started contemplating this idea.  This house is a dream come true and we are so excited to start living in it!

This week included more installation of lights, cabinets, and trim as well as bits and pieces like tile grout and the start of the final coats of paint.  I also heard this week that some are referring to our house as "Snow White's house" which I think is so fun since we get that Charlotte looks like Snow White a lot.  All the bits and pieces that we picked out months ago are coming together and we are so pleased with the way the house is looking!

I absolutely love the Walker Zanger Vibe tile backsplash accent in the kitchen as well as our cabinetry.  We worked with a custom cabinet shop locally and they did a fantastic job!  I'll walk you through that whole process sometime soon but, suffice it to say, I would work with them all over again!

Our cabinet guys did our pantry too and I'm so excited about it!  Since this room doubles as our tornado shelter we left open floor space for us to hang out in.  And since the shelves are adjustable we'll be able to move them around based on our storage needs.

We finally got our two yoke lanterns installed at the front entry and they look fantastic.  We looked hard at Bevolo French Quarter lights on a yoke but didn't feel entirely comfortable with the size recommendations and the thought of custom ordering them from New Orleans and what would happen if we felt like they were incorrectly sized. (We found out later that they will accept lights for return in exchange for a different size if you get them to your house and need a different size, but the turnaround time and uncertainty was just too much for us.)  So we ended up using our local lighting supplier to order St. James Magnolia fixtures with the half yoke and they turned out beautiful even if they are hard to see in this picture.

The master had its mirrors hung and lights installed and we're very happy with the way it turned out.  We can't wait to get to use it every day!

Our foyer fixture was installed! This Currey and Co Waterloo Chandelier is beautiful and I think goes with the relaxed feel of the house perfectly, but it also formal enough to be used in such a large space.  We, again, got this through our local lighting guy and he got us a great deal on it.  I'll post more about tips on lighting but it's amazing the prices that local places can get you if you buy most or all of your fixtures from them.

I'm so excited about using our new mudroom next to the back door! Charlotte has chosen the far right cubby as hers and every time she walks by it points out her cubby.  They'll be chock full of stuff soon so I need to enjoy their emptiness while I can!  (These were also made by our cabinet guys, they're awesome!)

I am so ready to use my new office!  I am totally in love with the bookcase that was inspired by this one from Pinterest and love that this little space is all my own!

And the look and feel of the powder bath might be one of my favorite in the house! It helps that it's basically complete already with the mirror and lights while the other rooms are still empty but I love this mirror (that I got at Hobby Lobby) and the lights work so well hung from the side walls!

I think I'll take one more set of pictures of the empty house this weekend before we move and then I'll start showing the house as we unpack....it might take me a while though so please be patient!  If you have any questions about the process please let me know and I'll be happy to answer as best I can!

Construction Chronicles - Let there be light!

This week was a fun one because we got lights on!  The house is quickly starting to look more and more like a home and we are very excited to move in!  We also got plumbing almost completed this week and now having indoor plumbing and running water in the house, so that's a definite step up. :)  And our beautiful tile back splashes in the kitchen and butler's pantry went in and they are every bit as beautiful in person as I hoped they would be!

I love the St. James Magnolia fixtures that we put on the exterior of the house

The Walker Zanger Ashbury Vibe backsplash looks greener in this picture that it is, but I was unable to get rid of that tint.  I  love how it turned out!

This week will be busy with the rest of the cabinets coming in, the range & hood, paint, more plumbing and lights, and lots of other finishing touches.  We're still hoping for a move in a week from Friday!

Construction Chronicles - Fast and Furious

This week was very slow in the beginning as the floors were getting stained and we weren't allowed in the house.  And then on Friday things went crazy as more cabinetry was delivered, stone was delivered,  and light fixtures were delivered.  The house looks totally different now and will look even more different in another week!

I am so happy with the way that Luca's room turned out! It's going to be so neat!

I can't wait to use my new wrapping station in the laundry room!

This week we've got light fixtures going in, plumbing, appliances, closets, carpet, and hopefully the fence!  We ran into a small hiccup with the range hood this week but have been promised that we'll have one by the end of the week so it shouldn't hold us up.  Which leaves us looking at moving in two and a half weeks which seems crazy!  We'll see if that ends up coming true!

Construction Chronicles - Our Kitchen is Now a Kitchen! (kind of)

Our house is looking more and more like a home with each passing day and we are so excited! We've booked movers at the urging of our builder but still aren't totally confident that we'll hit that date.  He is though so we're looking at the end of the month which is CRAZY!

This week was a big one since our kitchen cabinets (minus the island) and our Butler's Pantry cabinets got delivered.  This allowed the stone guys to come and template for stone and also allowed our trim guys to finish the trim work in the kitchen area.  The trim guys also hung some new doors that just arrived and finished up the trim work.

It might look the same to you but the floors with their first round of sanding done look totally different to us!

This week starts the fast and furious wrap up work including staining the floors (Wed and Thurs), delivering the rest of the cabinets (Fri), delivering light fixtures (Fri), delivering stone (Fri).  The pictures from next week should look totally different!

Construction Chronicles - Iron Work

From now on the exterior pictures of the house aren't going to change very drastically, or at all, from the last week.  The only thing we're lacking outside is the fence which should be installed soon.  The interior is where the fun stuff is happening!

Inside this week we got the stair railing installed and we are so excited about it!  We worked with the local contractor to design it to mimic the arch that goes into the kitchen/den area and love the way it turned out!

We also got more tile completed, like the shower floor in the master, some of the tub surround in the master, and the shower surround in the Jack and Jill bath.

When the iron stair railing was installed they also brought the iron inserts for the china cabinets in the dining room.  I love this little piece of Alpha Chi love in the house!

Construction Chronicles - A Pop of Color

It's feeling more and more like a finished house as the days go by.  It's hard to believe that we might possibly be in it in 6 weeks! I'm not holding my breath, but that idea isn't looking so farfetched these days!

Last week we got our first round of cabinets in (bathroom vanities) and they look so good!  Most of shower wall tile is finished up except for in the Jack and Jill bathroom.  And the whole house has its first round of paint.  I LOVE the colors! I got my sorority sister, Laura, to help me with the paint colors.  We tweaked a few but it is the most gorgeous palette and just what I was looking for!

Library with one of my favorite features, this cast stone mantle! This was all Jason's idea and it turned out so good!  We got it from Mantels Direct which sounds so funny but it is beautiful and just what we wanted!  I'll blog more about it later.

We've heard talk that our kitchen cabinets might get installed this week which would be exciting!  We'll see if they show up!
